Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus. What happened before the birth of Jesus should also be celebrated.
Joseph and Mary were married before the birth of Jesus. Marriage mattered then, and it should matter now. Marriage shielded Mary from the disgrace of being labeled an unwed mother and shielded Jesus from being labeled an illegitimate child born out of wedlock.
To those responsible give the expecting unwed mother the gift of respect, and the unborn baby the gift of legitimacy.
