One of the Association’s fundraising events that is dedicated to supporting the needs of people with sickle cell disease and sickle cell trait is its annual walk. The Sickle Cell Walk brings together people with sickle cell along with the parents, grandparents, siblings, friends, relatives, and providers in a network of friendship and support. Funds raised help fuel innovative research, advocacy, and critical educational programs and services. Together, we are creating a world where all people with sickle cell can reach their full potential. SCDABC would like to thank The City Commission of North Lauderdale, the City Manager, and the wonderful staff for sponsoring the Walk 4 Sickle Cell on September 24, 2022, at the beautiful Hampton Pines Park. It was a wonderful sight to observe the walkers and to see some of the clients that are served and their families participate in the walk. Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman-Shultz brought greetings along with Mayor Ana M. Ziade, Commissioner Lorenzo Wood and the president of SCDABC Gloria Bailey who thanked all for their dedication and support for Sickle Cell Disease and Sickle Cell Trait Clients. The Association was so proud to have Mrs. Edith Pearl Maloney and her son Calvin present at the walk. Mrs. Maloney and her father attended the first walk-a-thon hosted by the Association in 1978. because of you that SCDABC can provide continued Outreach Services to our clients and their families. Sponsors who provided resources and services to the attendees included Holy Cross Health, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, Good Health Wins, the Westside Gazette and the local McDonalds. The Association will be celebrating its forty-five years of service to their clients and the community on November 19, 2022, at the Herb Skolnick Community Center, where they will honor five outstanding community servants for their dedication, contributions and commitment to SCDABC: Pamela A. Adams, Maxine Dalen, Vanessa Graham, Lisa Monroe, and Commissioner Lorenzo Woods. Sickle Cell Disease Association of Broward County,Inc. will also be awarding educational scholarships at the Annual Scholarship and Awards Banquet.
Sickle Cell Disease Association of Broward County, Inc. (SCDABC) was established in 1977 under the leadership of the late Cheryl Peterman, the late Honorable Judge Henry Latimer, and Levi Henry, Jr. The mission of the association is to enhance the lives of those living with sickle cell disease by addressing their medical, social, psychological, and informational need is. The founders of the Association wanted to educate the community and increase awareness about Sickle Cell Anemia and Sickle Cell Trait. Over forty-five years later the Association is keeping the mission relevant. This year during September “Sickle Cell Awareness Month”, the Association hosted two webinars entitled Let’s Talk: What is Sickle Cell Trait and Let’s Talk: Sickle Cell Will Not Defeat me. The webinars were hosted by Karen Smith, the Community Outreach Coordinator. The webinars are made available to be seen all over the world.
