Serena Williams, a tennis legend and entrepreneur, is now a co-owner of the WNBA’s newest team, the Toronto Tempo. She says that she aims to help build a legacy for female athletes in Canada.

On March 3rd, the Toronto Tempo made the announcement through a press release shared on the WNBA’s website. Expressing her excitement, Williams emphasized the importance of investing in women’s sports. “This moment is not just about basketball; it’s about showcasing the true value and potential of female athletes,” she said, according to Sports Illustrated.

Williams joins an ownership group led by Tanenbaum, Chairman of Kilmer Sports Ventures. Williams’ connection to Canada runs deep as she made her professional tennis debut there.

Tempo President Teresa Resch praised Williams for her impact on sports and business. “Serena is a champion,” she said. “She’s the greatest athlete of all time, and her impact on this team and this country is going to be incredible.”

As part of her role, Williams will help shape the team’s image, including involvement in jersey design and boosting the team’s visibility.

The WNBA must still approve Williams’ ownership, and the Toronto Tempo is set to make its debut in 2026
