Black, Brown and People of Difference Have the Most to Lose

No one is above the law. Except, it seems, for presidents like Donald Trump. In a landmark decision on Monday, the U.S. Supreme Court’s conservative majority granted former President Trump broad immunity from prosecution for certain official acts, while denying it for private acts. This 6-3 ruling, with the court’s liberal justices dissenting, basically alters the balance of power and accountability in American authority.

To this day, bigots dress up in the same shirts, suits, and ties. I’m certain if they could get away without people seeing how clownish they look, they would dye their hair orange. They refuse to reconcile these FACTS to their inevitable outcomes. They accuse actual victims of “playing the victim card.” They denigrate legislation laboriously devised to reverse the impact of these policies, and have made affirmative action and DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) “dog whistles” to summon other bigots.
In the world of politics, perception often trumps reality. This is particularly true in the case of Donald J. Trump, an entertainer who theatrically preformed his way into the presidency. As the difference between Trump and Biden becomes painfully clear to many of us, a significant number of voters are looking at Trump’s tenure with a growing sense of longing for the so called good old days, including the perception that they were better off economically. Today, polls suggest that voters in key swing states favor Trump over Biden on economic issues by a large margin.
But this is not a dream. This is our reality. It’s a call to action for us to remain vigilant, informed, and united. We must remember our history, honor our struggles, and continue to fight for justice and equality. Our families have endured and continue to suffer too much for us to forget the principles they fought for and the likeness of those they fought against.
As citizens of a democracy, our role in shaping its course cannot be overstated. Whether we cast our vote for President Joe Biden and the strides he has made for inclusion or Donald Trump for all that he has done and is doing to discredit this country as a democracy as a whole, our actions affect what happens in our country’s history. We better believe that our responsibility for our rights extends way beyond the ballot box; it includes the values we uphold, the causes we champion, and the ideals we strive and will fight for.
In essence, embracing love over fear is the key to rise above self-imposed limitations and peep into true peace and a bit of spiritual awareness. It’s a journey that requires some humbling, courage, and unwavering faith in the changing power of love. And as we navigate through life’s uncertainties, let us remember that with enough love, we can find stillness amidst the storm, knowing that love conquers all and that ultimately, “this too shall pass.”
