The 100 Black Men get ready to give back with 3rd Annual Golf Tournament

Golf tournaments and scholarships for local youth go hand-in-hand and The 100 Black Men of Greater Ft. Lauderdale are doing their part to give back to the South Florida community with their third Annual Golf Tournament and Scholarship Luncheon on Saturday, June 22th, 2013, 8 a.m. at the Palm-Aire Country Club in Pompano Beach, Fla.

It raises scholarship funds for young men who graduate from the group’s Leadership Academy who want to continue their education. In its 8th year, the Leadership Academy continues to see exponential growth as young men voluntarily seek mentorship and guidance from community mentors who serve as role models.

According to the President of The 100 Black Men of Greater Fort Lauderdale, Dennis Wright, the Leadership Academy is a raging success when it comes to sending young Black males to college. “In the eight years we have been conducting our Leadership Academy, our numbers show that if a young man attends for 18 months or longer, we have a 100 percent collegiate rate!”

Wright explained how the scholarship is good for those graduating high school seniors. “The scholarship is one-year renewable so as long as they maintain a 2.5 GPA and come back and help mentor the young men who are still in the Leadership Academy, the scholarship is renewed and if they continue with their education (on their way to a Master’s degree or Post-Doctorate degree), then we will continue to give them a scholarship each year,” said Wright.

There is still time to sign up for the golf tournament; however, space is limited to 90 golfers, male or female. .  Wright said the non-profit organization is always looking for new mentors as well since they can bring different experiences and exposure to different careers for the young men who attend the program.

He also emphasized the importance of introducing the sport to the high school students who will be volunteering their time that Saturday to work the tournament and benefit their own academy—and for men (and women) in the community to come out and play in the tournament to support the youth.

“Golf is a sport we want to give our young men more exposure to because we know golf is aligned with business—successful business.  And I would think that you (adults) would participate to make a young man more successful in business and life, “explained Wright.
