“The devil gets a makeover”

By Pastor Rasheed Z Baaith

“Ye are of your father the devil…for he is a liar, the father of it.” (John 8:44)

One of the things many in the Church forgets is that Satan/Lucifer/the Devil is, according to 2 Corinthians 4:4, the god of this world and as such he is able to move people, places and things into position to promote himself in whatever way he pleases. That includes in the world’s six spheres of entertainment, education, sports, business/commerce, politics and religion. I think the domain of entertainment, which has such influence and sway over the world, is one of his greater strongholds.

If we look in the Gospels, especially the Book of John, the LORD Jesus gives us a clear description of the characteristics of the devil. John 8:44 in full reads, “Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own; for he is a liar, and the father of it.”

From what the Christ said in the description of the Devil/Satan/Lucifer, he has no redeeming qualities of character. None. Yet if we watch the new FOX television program Lucifer, we see a demon that is compassionate, understanding, and honest. We see the exact opposite of what Christ describes and the Church teaches is the essence of evil.

We need to ask ourselves what is the intention of this depiction, why this portrayal at this time and who is the audience?

Some of us will no doubt think this is no big deal, no real cause for concern. And we would be wrong. Any time evil is made to appear not just acceptable but attractive, we are offering up our children’s thinking to become confused while their character is corrupted.

The devil in this television program is fashionable, wealthy, eye-catching and smart. Who among our children does not want to be like that? Who among us does not want to be like that?

We are living in a time when God is called a myth, righteousness is called out of place, and truthfulness is considered an option to be used only if there is an advantage to be gained. The result is our children are developing minds that acquiesce so much of what is so wrong.  And the Church in its desire to be modern and have its seats filled is trying to build up itself with compromise. It no longer wants to contend for the faith revealed by Jesus. Too many in the Church want to accept a faith constructed by men.

Not all of the Church of course, but way too much of it.

Who is the target audience of this great deception? All of us are. The Devil hopes we will be so dazzled by the light of this slickly produced body of lies we will rethink the truth of what Christ said.  Sad to say, many of us will.

2 Corinthians 4:4 teaches us perfectly what has happened to a number of us, “In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them.”

Ask yourself: Whose vision is television?  And what are they trying to make you see?

Here is what you and I need to remember. Whatever evil you see around you and in this world, whatever wrong you witness, whatever lies you hear; all of the dishonesty, all of the violence, the murder and the bloodshed, Lucifer is the cause of it. All of it. No matter what television shows us so incorrectly about him.

Just think about it.
