WASHINGTON — The White House, on Sept. 2, said that there are still some active threats from the Islamic State-Khorasan Province in Afghanistan.
They informed that the officials from the U.S. are in close touch with the roughly hundred American citizens who are still stranded in Afghanistan following the withdrawal of the U.S. military.
During a press briefing, White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said that the number of Americans still in Afghanistan following the complete U.S. troop withdrawal is “closer to 100.”
“We are in close touch with the State Department, our diplomatic officials, with all of these individuals and, we are working in close coordination to discuss how they can leave the country and if they can leave the country,” said Psaki.
Talking about the charter flights, Psaki said that the United States does not have personnel on the ground in Afghanistan and confirmed that the U.S. “does not control airspace.”
“There have been reports, as I think many of you have seen or reported yourself, about charter flights,” said Psaki.
“If I can just make a — speak to that for a moment because I know it’s been a popular question.”
“There are active, continue to be active, Islamic State-Khorasan threats,” Psaki said, adding that there is “concern” about these potential charter flights and “where these flights go,” as Islamic State has a “keen interest” in aviation targets.
Psaki gave an updated breakdown of evacuees who actually made it to the U.S. between Aug. 17 and Aug. 31, saying that in total, 31,107 people have arrived.
Earlier this week, U.S. President Joe Biden warned the Islamic State-Khorasan Province (ISIS-K), the group which killed 13 U.S. troops in a suicide bombing at Kabul airport, and said that the U.S. is not done with the terrorist group.
“We discussed the strike that U.S. forces took last night against the terrorist group Islamic State-Khosran Province in Afghanistan,” said Biden in a statement.
“I said we would go after the group responsible for the attack on our troops and innocent civilians in Kabul, and we have. This strike was not the last. We will continue to hunt down any person involved in that heinous attack and make them pay.”
“To Islamic State-Khosran Province, we are not done with you yet,” Biden said, adding that “to those who wish America harm, we will hunt you down, and you will pay the ultimate price.”
The United States forces left Afghanistan on the morning of Aug. 31, marking the end of a chaotic and messy exit from America’s longest war.
