Tokyo Olympics: Indian Sports Fraternity Elated As Indian Men’s Hockey Team Win Medal

NEW DELHI — The sports fraternity rejoiced on Aug. 5, 2021, as the Manpreet Singh-led Indian men’s hockey team clinched the bronze medal at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics. The Indian boys defeated Germany 5-4 to win the first medal in 41 years in hockey at the Olympic Games.

Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar congratulated the team.

“Congratulations to each & every member of the hockey contingent on winning the #Bronze for India! A fantastic hard-fought win. The penalty corner save by Sreejesh in the dying moments of the game was amazing. Entire (India) is immensely proud,” his tweet read.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India also lauded the Indian team.

“The Sky is Blue indeed. Heartiest congratulations #TeamIndia, for winning a Bronze Medal Third place medal. The entire nation is proud of you. #Cheer4India (sic),” tweeted the board.

Meanwhile, Singh expressed gratitude towards the Chief Minister of Odisha, Naveen Patnaik, for supporting the Indian Hockey team.

“This dream won’t be possible without the encouragement & vision of Hon’ble Chief Minister of Odisha Shri Naveen Patnaik ji @CMO_Odisha @sports_odisha who has been supporting us throughout this journey – thank you so much sir from the team and I #OdishaCelebratesOlympicGlory,” his tweet read.

Further, Olympics Gold medalist, Abhinav Bindra, congratulated the team and said that the medal is a “culmination of planning and hard work done over the past few years.”

“An emotional moment for the entire nation, a moment of pride,” he tweeted.

“The long wait has ended! Congratulations to the Indian Men’s Hockey team for their splendid achievement.”

Track legend P.T. Usha also expressed her excitement for the bronze medal and referred to the Indian men’s hockey team members as her “sons.”

“Congratulations to my sons for their exceptional performance to win the bronze medal. The entire country is proud of the show they have put on during the #Olympics. May this be the start of another golden era for Indian hockey,” she tweeted.

Former shooting ace Colonel Rajyavardhan Rathore also commended the Indian Men’s Hockey Team.

“Heartiest congratulations #TeamIndia. The Men’s Hockey Team has ended the 41-year wait for a medal at the #Olympics #Cheer4India,” he tweeted.

Former India batsman Suresh Raina also lauded the winning team’s efforts.

“Heartiest Congratulations to the Indian Men’s hockey team! We are super proud of your efforts & this victory will forever be cherised! #Hockey #Olympics #Tokyo2020 (sic),” he tweeted.

Indian Hockey Team last won a gold medal in the sport at the 1980 Moscow Games. The team captain, Singh, dedicated this win to the Covid-19 workers working round the clock to save lives.

The Indian Sports Minister, Anurag Thakur, will felicitate the winning team on Aug. 9, 2021.
