FORT LAUDERDALE, FL — The Urban League of Broward County, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering communities and assisting individuals and families in the areas of education, jobs, housing and health, recently turned up the technology switch in their digital classrooms with laptops funded by Fort Lauderdale-based Florida Career College (FCC) as part of a new corporate partnership.

Located in the Urban League of Broward County’s 28,000 square-foot Sunshine Health Community Empowerment Center, the digital classrooms will serve as a resource hub allowing members of the community to utilize advanced technology that may not otherwise have been accessible to them. As a result, this will help to provide alternative educational advancement tools and assist with workforce development and financial literacy.

Executives from FCC, a career-focused school with 12 campuses throughout the state offering industry-specific curricula, recently toured the Ur-ban League facility and had the opportunity to see students at work on the new laptops.

“One of the biggest barriers to education is financial, and we hope to make a significant impact on the services that the Urban League needs every day including computer and Web access,” said FCC Vice President of Student Development Lawrence Avers. “We’re excited to continue to broaden our relationship with the Urban League by helping to connect students to their futures through industry-current programs and employability skills training.

Among those from FCC who joined Avers for the tour were Executive Director of FCC-Lauderdale Lakes Dr. Gilbert Delgado and FCC Vice President of Marketing Erik Brodie. During the tour, led by Urban League of Broward County President and Chief Executive Officer Dr. Germaine Smith-Baugh and Vice President of Philanthropy and Communications Joe Toliver, the group discussed future plans for seasonal meet-and-greets and job fairs.

“We are grateful to Florida Career College for investing in the parents, youth and community residents and for helping us in our ongoing mission to serve as a catalyst for change in Broward County,” said Dr. Smith-Baugh. “We are already noticing a difference in the energy of our students and look forward to guiding them as they enter or re-enter the workforce and strive to reach their full potential.”

Since 1975, the Urban League of Broward County has been empowering communities and changing lives. Through support from local partnerships, such as FCC, and non-profit or-organizations, the Urban League of Broward County has evolved into a successful community-based organization dedicated to the achievement of social and economic equality.
