A story of Terry Cain, a 51 year old

By Bobby R. Henry, Sr.

Three Florida teachers and a teacher’s assistant have died of COVID in the Broward County School District in last few days, and neither of the four were vaccinated.

Those who do not get vaccinated are risking their own lives and the well-being of others. Prayerfully, this heart wrenching news will touch the minds of those who have not been vaccinated all across the country to reconsider for the sake of others.

How many of us know someone who has had Covid, is living with COVID or who has for the worst, died from it?

It’s time for us to really take a serious look at this pandemic,  how we are playing a major part in its spreading and in any hopes of it stopping.

Tablet to communicate

I’ve talked to several people, including family members, who have suffered with COVID. I want to share this story /opportunity I had to talk to a young man who had COVID, was hospitalized in Intensive Care on a ventilator, and yet he’s able to tell his story. It is so heartbreaking that many people can’t share the same story as he can as he is alive to tell others about it.

For whatever reason you decide to get vaccinated or not, that’s your personal choice; however, our personal choices are what have put us in a predicament such that we are in.

There comes a time when we have to step outside of ourselves and take a look and see how what we do can harm and kill somebody else. Yes, there are reasons for those who object to getting vaccinated, and it appears that in this case the ends does justify the means.

“I got pissed the f@#& off when our governor said, “don’t wear mask…” Anyone that can make that uneducated statement never felt this virus and that is like a slap in the face to me,” and this is how the story began with Terry T9 Cain, 51 of Fort Lauderdale, Florida begins.

“It does not just eat up your lungs, it attacks your whole body and let’s not talk about if you beat that part. After being in a coma and on a ventilator, there are lifelong after affects. Your sight, memory, concentration,  survivors remorse, strokes, mental illness  and other consequences that you will have to live with. You live in fear about getting it again. I don’t know man – we have to do something.

“Here today, gone tomorrow. I really understand that now… and for the puppet and that blonde hair orange guy to play with it really makes me angry cause I don’t believe he ever had it.

“My Name is Terry Cain. I was born September 26, 1970. In Fort Lauderdale, FL. In the neighborhood of Lake Aire off of 19th Street near Bass Park Pool. I work for Broward County Parks and Recreation for 27 years. On June 9, 2020, I went to sleep with what I thought was the flu and a temperature of 103. The next morning I woke up, nothing had changed and my temperature had not gone down.

“A friend of mine suggested I go to the ER. So my cousin gave me a ride to BGMC. My temperature was 106 by then, I think. I was put in a room alone with a nurse. Then a doctor came in and said I had COVID 19. My breathing became more difficult. I was told to lie on my stomach. I still couldn’t breathe right; I was put on oxygen. I was then intubated and put in a Medical induced coma. I WOKE UP 10 DAYS LATER . I also had two strokes while in the coma. I went through rehab for a weeks. When I went home I was still on oxygen. I would advise everyone to get the shot. It wasn’t out when I got sick. Till this day I still suffer for the virus. PTSD. My vision is affected, depression, and can’t sleep. Growing up I was very active, played football, worked at my father’s Shell gas station on Sunrise and 31st and graduated from Piper High C/O 89. I mean I was just a normal guy.

“No, I wasn’t scared to get vaccinated, especially coming from a near death experience- lol. I believe the vaccine is helping.

“As a child and a teenager, I was very active. I played football, traveled and worked out. Now, all of that I feel like it has been taken away from me. I’m afraid to work out and to be in crowds. Whenever I feel my heart beating fast I stop, fearing I will be back in the hospital. I take mental health meds now to help control the fear and depression, and survivor remorse (Survivor’s guilt is when a person has feelings of guilt because they survived a life-threatening situation when others did not).

“And it also deals with your memory; balance is sometimes off. I had to be turned over every day while  in the coma – 16 hours on my back and eight hours on my stomach. The weight loss, fear of it happening again! I would tell anyone that has not gotten the shot they need too!!!”

How many people have you known to pass away from COVID and what do you believe should be used to encourage more people to get vaccinated?

“I’ve have had two coworkers  die from COVID, and three very close friends to die from COVID. I have a close cousin, during the time when I was going through COVID, sent text messages to friends of mine to tell me to be strong and fight and that she loves me and she was worried about me. A few days ago her father, my uncle Tyson Jones, said to me that Tina isn’t going to make. It really has me numb now”.

Tina’s real name is  Katina Jones, one of the four Broward County School educators who passed away from COVID-19 a few days ago while still on summer break. Their choice not to get vaccinated was a fatal one that has left deep voids to be filled and prayerfully has opened the doors to rethink the options for others.

Terry continued, “When I was on that ventilator I was just hoping  that this is the day I wake up. I dreamed a lot. This has brought me closer to God. I would tell people that this virus is very painful and scary. It is very important to wear your mask, wash your hands, and get vaccinated. I just need everyone to understand this virus is very sneaky! it feels like the flu, but believe me it is not. I was told by one of my nurses that 80 percent of the people that were in my position don’t make it. When I had 60 percent oxygen in my blood, that was a good day. By the grace of God. I’m able to tell my experience… please get your vaccine now and build up your immune system. This thing hurts and there are always after affects… I couldn’t talk. I had to write on a board.

“If you don’t want to get vaccinated for yourself, do it to not let somebody go through with what I did and almost died.”
