History Fort Lauderdale, proud steward of our communityâs past by making our heritage accessible and engaging to residents and visitors, will honor the contributions and creativity of our African American community during its annual Black History Month celebration. This yearâs Dillard Center for the Artsâ Advanced Placement (AP) student exhibition and sale will include mixed media, charcoal, photography and digital art. The students, along with guest curator Celestin Joseph, AP studio art instructor, will be available for a meet and greet on Sunday, Feb. 2, from 1 â 3 p.m., at the New River Inn. The show and sale will run through Wednesday, Feb. 26.
The Coral Springs-based Phi Xi Zeta chapter joins thousands of chapters around the world celebrating the 100th anniversary of Zeta Phi Beta Incorporated, a womenâs service organization founded on the principals of Scholarship, Service, Sisterhood and Finer Womanhood. The chapter will celebrate the centennial at an awards luncheon recognizing an individual from the community for their leadership and service impacting education in Broward County. Phi Xi Zeta chapter asks the public to submit nomination applications for the Community Leader of the Year Change Maker Awards by Friday, Jan. 31, 2020.      Recently, the Florida Department of Education released graduation rates for the 2018/19 school year. Broward County Public Schools (BCPS) is proud to announce the Districtâs Federal Graduation Rate (includes traditional high schools, centers and charter schools) rose to 86.2%, which is nearly 15 percentage points higher than in 2011/12. The graduation rate for traditional District high schools only (excludes centers and charter schools) maintained its highest level from 2017/18, at 95.1%. Â
Ryan Matthews from Texas was just 17-years old when he was accused of a crime he didnât commit. He later spent 5 years on death row, but was later exonerated and released. Now at 39-years old, he is celebrating being a college graduate.
    The veteran comic Deon Cole (whom you might know from his role on Blackish, Grownish or his many on-screen appearances on Conan, where he worked as a writer) is just downright funny. From his laid-back demeanor on stand up to his hilarious one-liners on blackish, Cole keeps us laughing.
    There was a mass shooting in this country every single day in 2019 and 29 of those 385 mass shootings were also mass murders. Some of the most devastating tragedies included the Aug. 4 mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio, that killed nine people, an Aug. 13 mass shooting at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, where 22 people were killed, and three Dec. 1 shootings in New Orleans that left 11 people injured. The Gun Violence Archives reported the highest number of mass shootings since 2014.
    The Weinstein case has been categorized by some as one of the most significant #MeToo cases in history. This is because of the severity of the allegations against him and the fact that those allegations came early on in the movement and attracted much attention. Itâs also true that many of the allegations are fairly recent and involved some of Hollywoodâs best-known female stars. Conversely, many of the allegations in several similar cases are often decades old and/or occurred far outside of the statutes of limitations.
