The Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Iota Pi Lambda Chapter, provided eight high school graduates from the South Dade community with scholarships as part of the organization’s “Go to High School, Go to College” national initiative. Close to $8,000 in scholarships were awarded through the Iota Pi Lambda Education Foundation.

The HBCU icon of the week is Jackson State’s W.C. Gordon, a quintessential husband, father, Christian man of God, educator and highly acclaimed and accomplished football coach. Born in Nashville. Tennessee on June 30, 1930, Coach Gordon took his heavenly flight on October 23, 2020. Between those years represented by the dash, he left an indelible legacy that surely stands the test of time.

With much anticipation, today’s School Board meeting in Broward county is expected to be like a precursor to the Fourth of July show. With a boldness like none seen before, Dr. Earlean Smiley has put together an organization chart and placed people in positions to “ready the district” for the change needed to move forward towards excellence. Whether you have agreed or disagreed with her, there is no doubting that Smiley is a strategic leader who has demonstrated a great deal of vision, competence and confidence not seen in Broward in a long time. She was described by her former student, Board member, Torey Alston as “unbossed” and “unbothered”, and that she has been.
