I sincerely believe that the conversation revolving around our athletes considering alternatives to SEC/ACC and other schools whose politicians constantly vote against the interests of African Americans is finding traction in many circles. For fear of redundancy, just take a gander at my previous NOTS to gain greater insight re my proposal which is definitely politically motivated. I can assure you that the majority are Black. When Georgia integrated in the early 70s, 5 Black players received athletic scholarships. Today, out of approximately 125 on roster, somewhere between 60-70 are of African American descent. Those stats are probably similar for every SEC and ACC team. When you think of Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Florida, North and South Carolina, Texas, Oklahoma, Tennessee, et. al., what comes to mind? For me it’s the ole South, the confederacy. I desire that our parents and athletes become more politically astute. Let’s talk…..
Florida native Noah Lyles, 26, earned the title of world’s fastest human by taking gold in the 100 meters at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest, Hungary, with a personal best 9.83 seconds.
The victory puts him in position to be the first person to win the 100-200 sprint double since Jamaica’s Usain Bolt, who retired in 2017. Coco Cauff, who in the semifinals eliminated #1 ranked Iga Swiatek in 3 hard fought sets, won her 5th professional tournament, defeating Karolina Muchonva in the Western and Southern Open with a dominant performance 6-3 and 6-4. The victory, Coco’s first in eight matches verses Swiatek, assuredly makes her one of the favorites in the upcoming U.S. in New York beginning August 28th.
The Westside Gazette and publisher Bobby R. Henry, Sr., extend heartfelt sympathy to the family of Alex Collins, who died tragically in a motorcycle accident last week.
