Col. Carl Croston Johnson, one of the last known living members of the famed Tuskegee Airmen, died last week at age 97 in Reston, Virginia. Col. Johnson was born in 1926 and was discharged from active duty in the US Army Air Force in 1947. The Tuskegee Airmen was a group of African American military pilots who served in World War II.
Johnson later returned to active duty as a U.S. Army aviator to fight in the Korean War. During the Vietnam War, Johnson commanded a seven-company aviation battalion and was a commander of a U.S. Army Aviation Battalion. He then retired after 31 years of military service.
Col. Johnson, was the last Tuskegee Airman to graduate from the Tuskegee Institute and went on to serve in World War II as an Aviation Cadet, The Korean War as a combat Army Aviator, and in the Vietnam War as a Lt. Colonel commanding the 210th Combat Aviation Battalion.
Johnson spent his final years living in the Potomac Green community in Ashburn, Virginia.
