While more than 80 percent of high school students across the nation hope to visit a college campus, only about half ever have the opportunity to do so. For many low-income students, the chances are even lower due to financial limitations, transportation challenges, and other logistical barriers.
On February 16, 2026, ASPIRE Academy worked to close that gap by organizing a comprehensive college tour experience for local students and families. A group of 33 students, along with eight parents and four staff members, traveled across South Florida to visit three universities: University of Miami, Florida International University, and Florida Memorial University.
The tour gave students a firsthand look at campus life, academic programs, and admissions opportunities while allowing them to imagine themselves in a college environment. Throughout the day, students remained highly engaged—asking thoughtful questions during campus visits and comparing their impressions of each institution.
During the ride home, lively conversations filled the bus as students discussed what stood out to them about the campuses at FIU and the University of Miami. However, several students shared that Florida Memorial University left the strongest impression, describing the historically Black institution as feeling like a true “home away from home.”
The college tour also served as the starting point for a week of continued academic preparation and mentorship through ASPIRE Academy. Students in 10th and 11th grades participated in SAT and ACT preparation sessions, while 10th grade students gathered for a Saturday mentoring meeting focused on goal setting, academic planning, and college readiness.
Through initiatives like these, ASPIRE Academy continues to break down barriers, increase college awareness, and equip students and families with the knowledge and confidence needed to pursue higher education.
Programs that expose students to real college environments can play a powerful role in shaping their aspirations. For many participants, the day’s experience turned the dream of attending college into something more tangible—bringing future goals clearly into view.
