Teen Charged After Listing Black Classmate as ‘Slave for Sale’ on Craigslist

CHICAGO, IL –A teenager from Illinois is facing hate crime charges for allegedly creating and posting a listing on Craigslist that included a picture of his Black classmate with the words: “Slave for Sale”.

According to reports, the teen, who is a student at Naperville High School, took a photo of a Black classmate at school on November 14th and uploaded it on Craigslist.

Naperville Police Chief Robert Marshall said that the ad, which he described as “despicable” and “extremely offensive,” also had racial slur on it.

“Every single person deserves the right to feel safe and welcome in our community, and this department will continue to strive to make that a reality by thoroughly investigating any allegations of hate crimes and bringing those found responsible to justice,” he said.

DuPage County State’s Attorney, Robert B. Berlin, also expressed his dismay on the incident, saying that “anyone, regardless of age, accused of such disgraceful actions will be charged accordingly.”

The teen, whose name as well as exact age was not released, is facing two felony hate crime charges and one charge of disorderly conduct. The teen is set to appear in court on December 18.
