Important to Know
*Coronavirus attacks the body from head to toe – Covid-19 disease primarily affect the lungs and can lead to severe respiratory symptoms but scientists and doctors are now learning that the disease can affect the brain, kidneys, heart, vascular systems and digestive systems.
*Digestive system: Some patients report gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhea, and vomiting. Stool samples have tested positive for coronavirus.
*Cardiovascular system: Some patients with Covid-19 are more prone to blood-clotting. Clots in large blood vessels can lead to stroke or pulmonary embolisms. Blood clots can also lead to multiple organ system failure. Some patients suffer heart-lining inflammation, heart attacks, or abnormal heart rhythms.
*Nervous system: Some studies have found coronavirus in cerebrospinal fluid. Patients have reported a loss of smell and taste. Some patients have experienced seizures and hallucinations. Even young patients have suffered strokes.
*Musculoskeletal systems: Some patients have mild muscle and joint aches with Covid-19 infection. Others report severe pain.
*Kidneys: Blood clots in capillaries may prevent blood from reaching the kidneys. This can result in acute injury to the kidneys and kidney failure. Many patients that are hospitalized in intensive care units have required kidney dialysis.
*Be vigilant about health-care needs – There is a growing concern that individuals with acute health crises are electing to avoid going to the hospital or other healthcare settings because they are concerned about the possibility of contracting Covid-19. It is important that individuals in need of acute medical care seek care immediately.
Emergency services and hospitals are designed to manage, and control infections and patients should not avoid these settings out of fear. Individuals should avoid self-care in the event of an acute health symptom such as a heart attack. If you feel that you are experiencing an acute health event, please call 911 immediately.
