Albert Hannah, Class of 1968 (deceased):
Albert Hannah is a 1968 graduate of Mays High School. He played football, basketball and baseball, and ran track.
Albert was a standout in football. He was an outstanding wide-receiver for the Mays Rams. He led his team to numerous titles including Big 9 Conference champs and the Class 2A State Champions, the only state football title in school history. A member of the undefeated 1966 State Championship team, Albert was an end who was named First Team All-State and also received All City and County 1966 football conference honors. He led the ‘66 squad in receiving touchdowns (7) and ranked second in scoring with 42 points. As a senior, he caught five touchdowns despite missing parts of the season due to an injury. The Rams ended the season 6-4 overall. He was named to the All County team. In his years in the Ram football program, the teams only lost four games in his entire high school career.
Albert has been described by Traz Powell as “one of the best all-around athletes I’ve ever coached.”
Albert also stood out on the basketball court. He was the leading scorer on the high school team and 3rd highest in the county. He scored 437 points in 22 games for a 19.9 average. His high game for the season was 36 points. The team won its first two Group 16AA playoff games before losing in the Group 16AA final to eventual state champion Key West HS in a game played at Killian HS. The Rams finished the season with a 16-9 record. In addition to being a unanimous First Team pick of both The Herald and The News, Albert was named First Team All Conference and Honorable Mention All-State and was named Player of the Week several times. His junior year the team carved a 18-8 mark. His team reached the Group 8 Final in that year. Albert was an outstanding baseball player throughout his high school career earning him All Star status. Albert ran track those same years, and ran on many of the relay teams. Albert was also chosen as 1967 Athlete of the Year at Mays High. After graduation he chose football and went to University of Wisconsin, where he was a three-year starter as a wide receiver for the Badgers football team. Albert was also a three-year letter winner for the Badgers and was on the freshman football team. As a sophomore, he made 10 receptions for 261 yards and three touchdowns. As a junior, Hannah caught 10 passes for 156 yards and two touchdowns. As a senior, he led the team in receiving with 39 catches for 608 yards and two touchdowns. Following the regular season, he was named All-Big Ten honorable mention. Albert had 59 receptions for 1,025 yards and seven touchdowns during his time with the Badgers and also played one year of freshman basketball for the Badgers. He is tied with Luke Swan for sixth all time in career average yards per reception at 17.4 yards per catch, and he had four career 100-yard games while at UW. He played in the North-South Shrine and American Bowl games during his senior year and was drafted by the Miami Dolphins in 1972. He was cut by the Dolphins in training camp and later joined the semi-pro Madison Mustangs of the Central States Football League. He was one of the league’s best wide receivers in his first year. He led the team with 30 catches for 475 yards and four receiving touchdowns. Madison won the Northern Division title with a 11-3 record after three exhibition victories, but fell in the CSFL playoff at West Allis, 27-17. He was named to the All Central States Football League team. He then moved on to play for the Hartford Knights of the Atlantic Coast Football League. On October 13, against New York, he had one receiving touchdown in the 39-14 victory. In the following game, against Western Massachusetts, he scored two receiving touchdowns in the 49-21 victory. On October 26, against New England, he scored three receiving touchdowns in the 31-23 loss. The Knights ended the 1973 season with a record of 8 wins and 4 losses, finishing second in the ACFL’s Northern Division. The ACFL and his team folded after the 1973 season. He signed and played briefly for the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the Canadian Football League. His undergraduate degree was in physical education. Hannah passed away on February 7, 2010. In 2015, he was posthumously inducted into the Coconut Grove Sports Hall of Fame.
