America’s Battle For 2024: Democracy v. Fascism

John Johnson

“ A democracy that  fails to: educate its people, uphold its laws, defend the rights of all its people, elect people of integrity, and refuse to reign in unethical Supreme Court Justices, ceases to be a government of, for and by the people.”

 John Johnson II, 12/13/23

The 2024 presidential election is destined to be the most challenging election since the Goa v. G. W. Bush election of 2000. However, this challenge isn’t about hanging chads or endless recount. Rather, it’s more about America’s voters having to vote for a democratic pro- democracy candidate or a Republican fascist candidate. In other words, America’s facing a democratic renaissance or a perilous fate because of rising fascism.

Despite, criticism and chicanery within the democratic party about Biden’s age, it remains a given that, as the incumbent president, he’ll be their 2024 presidential nominee. Amazingly, though Trump is facing 91 felony indictments and a highly contested civil trial, he’s projected at having a -600 favorability of landing the GOP presidential nominee, with Nikki trailing at +550.

Unbelievably, Trump proclaimed on national TV, should he become president again, he’ll be a dictator for one day. Obviously, this is as great a lie as his claim of still being president. Is there no end to his deceptions and lies?

This former president is the same person who criticized Colin Kaepernick, former football player, for kneeling during the playing of the National Anthem to protest police brutality.   Subsequently, though denied the right to earn a living playing football, he became a champion for civil rights. Whose behavior was patriotic? Only Republican Congresspersons and MAGA supporters hold Trump’s lies to be true.

It’s important to understand that Trump intends to replace democracy with fascism, which is a form of government popularized by Hitler, Germany’s Furor and Mussolini, president of Italy during the 20th century. These two men, along with the Emperor of Japan, started World War II. These three, labeled as axis of evil, failed and led their countries to perilous endings.

Given what we’ve learned from history about fascism and dictators, why during the 21st century, the Republican Party and MAGA supporters are allowing themselves to be enticed by Trump to abandon democracy for fascism?

Now, is it not clear as to why Trump and DeSantis favor eliminating the Department of Education as well as other democratic institutions? Blinded by their racism, the uneducated can easily be misled.

Former President Jefferson argued, “To have a successful democracy, the general populace needed to be educated.”  Public school students in middle school learn the difference between democracy and fascism. They also learn that democracy as a form of government is really a republic. As a ““republic,” its people vote to elect their representatives; thus, the government becomes of, for and by the people.

Republican Congresspersons have elected to honor party over Country. Trump honors no one, not even his oath to the U.S. Constitution. He merely lusts for power, money, and vengeance.

Weren’t adults also taught during their schooling that fascism is a far-right wing and ultranationalist political ideology led by a dictator? Did t they fail to learn about tactics used by dictators to divide people within their countries, how they scheme to gain power, and why they’re never willing to relinquish it? Should we not question if public and private schools failed to properly educate our students? Or did just Republicans and MAGA supporters fail both Civics and World History?

Former president Thomas Jefferson cited a profound correlation between democracy and education. Jefferson said, “citizens should be able to know and understand their rights and that an educated populace could resist tyranny.” Where’s the resistance from Republicans to resist fascism?

If Jefferson’s quote represents a truism, does it not infer that our democracy is in danger of succumbing to fascism with Trump as the dictator? Republican Congresspersons and MAGA supporters behave as an uneducated core of Confederate zealots eager to dismantle democracy. Or is democracy under attack by Trump because he thinks he’s above the law and that having been president, shields him from any prosecutions?

Trump’s words, penchant for criminality, adulterous behavior, and infantile level of cognition, even before becoming America’s 45th president, resoundingly demonstrated his unfitness to be a leader of anything, especially our Nation.

Only a Nation of uneducated people as well as the educated filled with racism, and those who favor fascism would ever again consider voting for Trump as America’s 47th president. Regrettably, history, if nothing else, has revealed that the Founding Fathers embedded into the fabric of America the evil ideology of white supremacy.

This white supremacy ideology again ignited by Trump, embraced by Republican Congresspersons and their base of MAGA followers would rather dismantle democracy than allow Black, Brown, and Red people to have their unalienable rights and basic freedoms.
