Anthony Nesty is set to make history as the first Black head coach of the U.S. Olympic swimming team.
On Thursday (September 21), Nesty, the head coach of the University of Florida swim team, was named the U.S. Olympic men’s swimming head coach, per NBC Sports.
Nesty previously served as an assistant coach on the U.S. staff during the Tokyo Olympics. At the time, Nesty became the second Black coach in U.S. Olympic swimming history, following Chris Martin, who served as an assistant at the 1992 Barcelona Games.
The UF coach headed the American team at the world championships in July in Budapest where the U.S. won the most medals for a 15th consecutive worlds.
This isn’t the first time Nesty has made history either. In 1988, Nesty won the Olympic 100m butterfly over American Matt Biondi. He became the first Black swimmer to win Olympic gold.
The official U.S. Olympic swim team is set to be decided in June during trials in Indianapolis.
