An event aimed at creating awareness about the growing menace of gun violence that is affecting the community and memorializing some of victims of gun violence was held on July 7th, 2023, at 6:30 p.m., at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, 800 NW 8th Ave. Pompano Beach, FL.

“We understand that gun violence is a topic that is of great concern to the community and the elected officials. That is why we feel it is important to bring these issues to the forefront and UNITE as a community in finding ways to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future”, stated Senior Pastor Branden Jones.

As some elected officials, community leaders and a newly formed strong presence the Circle of Brotherhood, showed their support to the victims’ families; reemphasizing that they do not stand alone in their grief and that their community stands with them in solidarity.

The event was moderated by the recently elected Chairman of the National Newspaper Publishers Association and publisher of the Westside Gazette newspaper, Bobby R. Henry, Sr. Henry kept the evening moving with knowledge and hope for ending gun violence that is caused by more than the guns.

“It’s ironic that this event should be held during National Mental Health Month. The damage from loaded guns and mental health issues has created a deadly combination that affects all of us. I could become very political but this is not my forum.”

The event was a time to reflect, remember, and to offer hope. This was accomplished through prayers given by local clergy and community members, performances, as well as a candlelight vigil and a moment of silence to honor those who have lost their lives to gun violence and to show the families that others do care.

Collectively the local elected officials shared similar sentiments concerning the issue of the rise of gun violence around the nation, and the fact that it is very prevalent in Pompano Beach.

“The community is coming together to support the families who have been victims of Gun Violence, and to have discussions that could lead to solutions and offer support to the families is needed now more than ever” said Commissioner Beverly Perkins.

“We hope you will be able to join us as we move forward to healing our communities. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns”, Novice Johnson, Mount Calvary Baptist Church.
