Pieper Lewis, the Iowa teen who killed a man she claimed raped her and was sentenced to probation and ordered to pay restitution to his family, has escaped from a juvenile detention facility. Lewis “walked away from the Fresh Start Women’s Center on Friday at 6:19 a.m. after cutting off her electronic monitoring tracking device,” officials said, recommending her probation be revoked.

     Today at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County, 66 percent of the Little Brothers and Sisters we serve identify themselves as Black or Biracial. By comparison, only 26 percent of our volunteer mentors identify as Black or Biracial.  Currently, 56 percent of our wait list – or 462 children – are Black or Biracial.

     Health insurance is complicated. Not many people will disagree with that. Happy 107th Birthday to Tamarac Resident, Verna Scott

     The Broward Sheriff’s Office Homeless Outreach Team works tirelessly to link displaced community members with the social services necessary to start anew and get back on their feet. Focused on providing care and assistance, the team has at least one specialist in every BSO district working full-time to support and assist these individuals.

     America’s democracy, as imperfect as it has been throughout its history, remains a banner for freedom and liberty for people throughout the world. The mantra that extols democracy’s virtuous tenets reads, “the pendulum of democracy swings ever so slowly towards a more perfect Union.” Yet, it’s the very attempts to nudge this pendulum forward and more hastily that triggers democracy’s greatest attacks.

Black Free Speech is Different

     Many Americans don’t know what to believe, and many may not vote because everyone is not telling the truth. Many Americans believe their vote does not count, but your vote is your voice. Get help, ask questions, educate yourself, and show up and vote.

As usual the best place to begin any story is at the beginning. About two months ago, I was turning onto NW 18th Avenue in Pompano Beach. NW 18th Avenue had been renamed Dr. B.J. McCormick Avenue in 1993 when I was 12-years old. I thought to myself  as I drove past the lot where his humble three-bedroom house once stood (he moved his family there in the late 1950’s from the projects), you can still see the concrete sidewalk that led from the road to the front door of the house. I wondered how many people live in the new houses and apartments that have no idea why that street is named that. The truth was I only knew a few things myself. You see, Dr. McCormick died July 10, 1977, four years before my birth.
