Christian fundamentalists believe we are living in the End-Times. So, why worry about climate change or plan for the future?  But they should worry, and they should plan. The notion that the end is near has needlessly troubled people throughout history beginning with the crucifixion. Prophets of every generation have predicted Armageddon. Yet we’re still here, and provided humankind does not do something insane, we will be for a long time to come.

So said Senator Marco Rubio during confirmation hearings to become secretary of state in the second Trump administration. In those few lines were indicators of the core beliefs that underlie current US policy toward China: that only China has “ignored all its obligations and responsibilities” and is untrustworthy; that China cheated its way to becoming rich; and, most disturbing, that US trade and technology policy must fully disconnect from China lest it continue to develop “at our expense.”

I’ll reopen Guantanamo. I’ll reopen Alcatraz. And the electorate can sigh with a sense of relief and safety. He’s bringing back our greatness – that is to say, our racist certainty. He’s recreating a country that real Americans can understand . . . one that’s like them.

Too many are copacetic about nuclear weapons. That nukes have not been used since Nagasaki leads them to conclude their use is so insane they will not be used, so everything is fine. The reality is far different, and the India-Pakistan conflict may lead to the first use since Nagasaki for a simple reason: Pakistan has a declared policy of “use ‘em rather than lose ‘em” and India’s conventional military superiority could give Pakistan as few as five minutes to launch or lose their “nuclear umbrella.” During the fog of war the potential for error is great.

In early April, I attended the Hands Off! Rally in Washington, DC. Living near the nation’s capital, I’ve always tried to engage in protests and events to support causes I believe in, often as a family with my wife and children. I fondly remember attending Barack Obama’s first inauguration, watching it on jumbotrons with thousands of others.

BLACKPRESSUSA NEWSWIRE — The Pope’s factual anthropological roots are not just symbolic. According to genealogist Jari Honora, his maternal lineage traces directly to the Black community of New Orleans’ 7th Ward, with family ties to Haiti, and census records identifying his ancestors as “Black” or “Mulatto.”

“The President’s Skinny Budget reflects funding levels for an agency that is responsibly winding down, shifting some responsibilities to the states, and thoughtfully preparing a plan to delegate other critical functions to more appropriate entities,” said Education Secretary Linda McMahon in a related statement. “The federal government has invested trillions of taxpayer dollars into an education system that is not driving improved student outcomes – we must change course and reorient taxpayer dollars toward proven programs that generate results for American students.”
