        The Florida Senate voted unanimously on Wednesday to pick St. Johns County as the site of the state’s Black History Museum.

       This was the start of the current obstacle facing Altadena residents hoping to rebuild their lives — leaving them questioning how they can go up against luxury developers rabid for real estate in the area, who are essentially pricing them out. In the months since the Eaton fire, 14 properties in Altadena have been sold and half of those properties were bought by real estate developers or investors, who quickly purchased land in the neighborhood via all-cash offers.

        Dashing and debonair, Hubert Fauntleroy Julian, the “Black Eagle,” was born in Trinidad in 1897. That was 90 years after Britain had abolished slavery, and Hubert came from a well-to-do family, which sent him to school in England. World War I caused the family to move him to safety in Montreal.

In a case that has ignited community outrage, Adrian Jelks, a young African American teenager with no prior criminal record, has been sentenced to 70 years in prison after what many are calling a profound miscarriage of justice. Adrian, who maintained he acted in self-defense during a confrontation at his workplace, was convicted in the shooting death of Antavius Holton despite significant evidence supporting his claims.

       A confrontation at a high school track meet in Texas left one teen dead and another facing a murder charge. And as the investigation into what led up to the tragic event continues, some members of the community are rallying around the 17-year-old suspect.
