This week, the Stark County coroner ruled that the death of 53-year-old Canton, Ohio resident, Frank Tyson was a homicide. Tyson died on April 18 following a violent interaction while in the custody of the Canton police department. Tyson, who was seen on video repeatedly telling officers ‘I can’t breathe,’ laid motionless for approximately six minutes until officers checked him for a pulse. Earlier this year, NAACP President and CEO, Derrick Johnson, sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) calling for a federal investigation into Tyson’s death. 

        This week marks a monumental victory for Black farmers as they begin receiving payments from the $2.2 billion Discrimination Financial Assistance Program (DFAP). After decades of advocacy and struggle, John Boyd, President of the National Black Farmers Association (NBFA), declared the day “a huge win.”

Aubrey Allen is the daughter of Kashanna Allen and Jovenel Eugene, I’m 10 years old, 5th grade, A/B honor roll student, unattached athlete in Track and Field from Lauderdale Lakes, Florida. I competed in the 2024 AAU National Club Championship in Jacksonville Florida at the University Of North Florida with a first place win in Turbo Javelin at 18.64m = 61FT-2IN.  On July 28-30, I continued on my successful journey to compete in the 2024 AAU Junior Olympic Games in Greensboro, North Carolina at Truist Stadium North Carolina A&T, to finish out the 2024 track and field  season in the top eight in the Nation placing 3rd in the Triathlon with a Personal Best Record in Shot Put at 7.75m = 25FT -5IN. High Jump placed 6th, Shot Put placed 15 out of 71 athletes. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Philippians 4:13. I am a 9 time All American Champion.

     One of the results of the northern “Great Migration” was the development of the “New Negro.” When World War One ended it brought home thousands of Black men who had more aplomb than when they left. According to the National Archives, more than 380,000 Black men served in the Army during the war. These Black men experienced respect, class and the novelty of being treated like an equal. The 1920’s saw the resentment of being treated like 3/5ths of man begin to be displayed. Subtle commentary  first began in our Black arts and culture. Harlem was the mecca for this Belle Epoque, known as the “Harlem Renaissance” (Renaissance)

Children who fail to achieve reading proficiency by grade 3 are four times more likely to drop out of high school. Thus, early literacy is an educational priority and an equity issue, as it can help mitigate the effects of poverty and systemic inequities.
