Pride, Prejudice, and Power

     June is Pride month in the United States. In big cities and small communities, LGBTQ+ people and their friends, families, and allies will celebrate freedom and progress toward full equality. All fair-minded Americans can celebrate that progress. But there is a growing shadow over this year’s celebrations. The far-right political movement is aggressively trying to turn back the clock to a time when LGBTQ+ people were not treated equally under the law. Anti-equality legal groups and anti-equality politicians are pushing legal and political attacks on our most vulnerable young people. Congresswoman Val Demings came out swinging against US Senator Marco Rubio igniting crowds at a series of South Florida rallies. Officials say an 18-year-old shooter fatally shot 19 children and two adults at a Texas elementary school on Tuesday before being slain by police. According to Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Erick Estrada, the shooter, Salvador Ramos of Uvalde, also shot his grandmother before crashing a vehicle near the school. He stated that she is in critical condition. Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Police Chief Pete Arredondo believes the gunman acted alone. […]
