The Bethune-Cookman Wildcats were no match for the No. 22 ranked University of Miami Hurricanes in a 48-7 loss on Sept. 14.
The Wildcats had 165 yards of total offense and converted 6-of-13 third downs.
Their lone score was a late fourth quarter run by quarterback Walter Simmons.
Backup quarterback Luke Sprague started but was injured. He is expected to miss time.
“We had an opportunity to play Miami. We sputtered on offense and defensively our technique and fundamentals weren’t there, but the guys fought hard to the end,” said Head Coach Raymond Woodie, Jr. during a Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) teleconference on Sept. 18.
Jackson State (2-2, 0-1) has quarterbacks Zy McDonald (222 pass yards, 3TDs) and Jason Brown (841 pass yards, 4 TDs); running back Irv Mulligan (322 yards rushing 4 TDs); wide receivers Duke Miller (16 catches, 142 yards); Rico Powers (13 catches, 309 yards, 3 TDs) and Isiah Spencer (13 catches, 120 yards, 1 TD); linebacker Isaac Peppers (31 tackles, 4 for loss, 1 sack); defensive backs Esias Guthrie (18 tackles, 1 for loss) and Tim Stewart (15 tackles, .5 for loss, 2 interception) and defensive linemen Phillip Webb (11 tackles, 3 for loss, 2 sacks) and Antonio Doyle (10 tackles, 2.5 for loss, 2 sacks).
Jackson State safety John Huggins (10 tackles) was a prep star at Mainland and Pine Ridge.
“Jackson State has a talented football team across the board. They have experience on offense; they’re big on both sides of the ball and they have a fast defense,” said Woodie.
Key B-CU players
B-CU has running back Jouvensly Bazil (100 rushing yards, 2 touchdowns); wide receivers Tink Boyd (5 catches, 84 yards); Daverno Ellington (10 catches, 95 yards) and Decari Allen-Johnson (10 catches, 55 yards, 2 TDs); linebackers Dearis Thomas (24 tackles, 3 for loss, 1 sack); Shelton Quarles, Jr. (12 tackles, .5 for loss) and Amarie Jones (9 tackles, 2 for loss, 1 sack, 1int, 1 TD); defensive backs Omari Hill-Robinson (15 tackles) and Iverson Clement (11 tackles, 3 batted passes); linebacker and defensive lineman Eddie Walls (8 tackles, 1.5 for loss, 1 sack, 1 fumble return TD).
The Cats also need to get running back Jimmie Robinson and kick returner Darnell Deas going.
No word on the starting quarterback between Simmons and Tylik Bethea. Bethea is listed as the starter but got his first action at Miami. Sprague is listed as the backup, but Simmons started the first two games. Camron Robinson is also on roster.
After the Tigers, B-CU travels to Alabama State University on Sept. 30; have a bye week on Oct. 7, then hosts Texas Southern University for homecoming on Oct. 14.
