Betty’s Soul Food Restaurant

By Sylvester “Nunnie” Robinson

My wife Sonia and I were aware that our neighborhood restaurant, Betty’s Soul Food, after a complete and thorough renovation, had reopened for  business, but until this past today, we hadn’t patronized. I suppose that, like us, many persons were just beginning to feel comfortable enough to return to some degree of normalcy after the Covid pandemic to venture in the public arena. The rising number of active shootings throughout the nation didn’t engender public confidence either. After reading Meredith McCleary’s highly complimentary review on Facebook and then hearing rave reviews from others including our nephew Dion Henry, we thought it a perfect opportunity as well as convenient  to experience in person dining there ourselves , even at the expense of foregoing Mt. Hermon AME Church’s tantalizing breakfast or traveling across town to Spoon’s on 19th and 441.

When we walked in, we were allowed to sit wherever we chose. There were tables for  two and four as well as booths strategically placed, creating a warm and inviting ambience. All essential/necessary condiments were available, compartmentalized in an appropriately placed tray on each table.

Multiple televisions accentuated the dining environment along with the melodic, soothing musical sounds, appropriately gospel on Sunday morning.

Sonia took particular note of the serving plates, perfect for food placement and  dining, while we both noted the friendly, kind and gracious demeanor of the waitresses who displayed an acute knowledge of menu items. And the menu itself offered clarity, simplicity and function. Finally, the primary reason for going was to enjoy good food. We weren’t disappointed. I opted for the smothered pork chops with grits, eggs over medium and non-buttered wheat toast, while Sonia enjoyed the delicious salmon which had been recommended by our nephew, Dion.

With the “Florida Travel  Bus Tour” (WOKE) coming to Fort Lauderdale in June as we join forces to combat the cultural assault on our communities across Florida by  the governor, one emphasis will be supporting Black businesses whenever and wherever possible. Betty’s Soul Food Restaurant would be a wonderful dining experience: NEW LOOK, Great FOOD, GREAT SERVICE !. Great PEOPLE!
