You must trade an eye for an eye , a tooth for a tooth, a hand for a hand, a foot for a foot 25 a burn for a burn, a bruise for a bruise and a cut for a cut. Exodus 21:24-25

    By Bobby R. Henry, Sr.

In recent times, unsettling trends in American politics have begun to surface, painting a dire picture for the future of democracy in this nation. The shadow of Project 2025 looms ominously over the landscape of power, threatening to unravel the very fabric of our society and upend the fundamental rights and freedoms that we hold dear, particularly for Black, Brown, women and the LBGQT+ communities.

One disheartening aspect of this unfolding narrative is the swift abandonment of principles by certain Democrats who have chosen to jump ship on President Biden after a single lackluster debate performance. In stark contrast, the deafening silence from both sides of the political aisle regarding the continued campaign of a man as morally compromised as Donald Trump is truly confounding. A convictedfelon, twice impeached, and implicated in numerous egregious offenses, Trump remains a compelling symbol of the erosion of ethical values in American politics, which disproportionately harms our disenfranchised communities.

Project 2025’s radical objectives are deeply troubling, aiming to dismantle crucial institutions such as public schools and the Department of Education, curtail voting rights, and reverse the progress made in combating climate change. These changes will disproportionately affect our already marginalized communities, who already face systemic barriers in education, voting, the justice system and environmental justice. The plan’s dangerous agenda, to replace federal workers with extremist and undermine vital programs like Social Security and Medicare, poses a severe threat to the very foundations of our society, with disregarded groups bearing the brunt of these cuts.

Furthermore, the alarming consolidation of executive power in various states as a prelude to the broader implementation of Project 2025 paints a grim picture of a future where checks and balances are eroded, local control is overridden, and dictatorship gains a foothold in our democratic system. Black and Brown communities, who have historically fought for representation and fairness, stand to lose the most in this power grab.

The disturbing influence of the U.S. Supreme Court’s recent ruling, granting extensive immunity to presidents for official acts and constitutional powers, paves the way for abuse of power, manipulation of justice, and erosion of democratic norms. The threat of sham investigations, surveillance of political opponents, and unchecked executive authority hangs unpromisingly over our political landscape, threatening the very essence of justice and fairness, especially for communities of color who have often been targets of such abuses.

Moreover, the ideological underpinnings of Project 2025, which seek to roll back Civil Rights advancements, attack Diversity, equity, and inclusion(DEI), and legalize discrimination against ostracized groups, are a blatant affront to the principles of equality and inclusivity that define our nation. Black and Brown people, who have historically been at the forefront of civil rights battles, stand to lose decades of progress in the face of this reverting agenda.

In the face of such grave threats to our democracy, it is imperative that we stand united against the encroaching forces of authoritarianism and intolerance. The choice before us is stark—either we uphold the victories of our past struggles for freedom, equality, and justice, or we risk descending into a dark abyss of tyranny and oppression as we bare witness to the killing of democracy.

Project 2025 stands as a blatant slap in the face, a blueprint for the erosion of democracy, the sabotage of civil rights, and the unraveling of the social fabric that binds us together as a nation. The time to act is now, to resist the forces of racism, regression and divisiveness, and to reclaim the promise of a fair, just, and inclusive society for all. Our future hangs in the balance, and those who are viewed as “lesser” in the eyes of a far-right, authoritarian ideology dictator  convicted of 34 felony counts, have the most to lose if we fail to heed the call to defend democracy and the values that define us as a nation.
