MIAMI, FL – “Our fourth annual symposium was a great success. I’m pleased with the panels, panelists and, proud to have presented Black excellence in Little Haiti,” Black Owned Media Alliance (BOMA) Symposium Chairwoman Melissa Hunter Davis on the activities exceeding her expectations. From panelist and moderators, to the keynote, attendees received an abundance of information to be progressive in this ever-evolving media space.
“When you are building a business in a rapidly changing industry you are going to have to be ahead of the game,” said Jamarlin Martin, founder of digital magazines Bossip, Madam Noire, and Hip-Hop Wired. Martin told his 2006 journey in media to the attendees of the 4th Annual Get to Know Black Media Symposium. He decided 10 years ago to provide news and information to the underserved Black online consumer.
His foresight in the digital stratosphere for the culture of Blacks guided him in the right direction of an online portal for Black people looking for their news. His pioneering thoughts are quantified by Nielsen media who now reports that African Americans media consumption averages 44 minutes per day.
“You are going to have to tap into the people who are going to be the leaders a year from now. Two years from now. Three years from now. Five years from now. The differentiation of Bossip not just talking about what Jay Z was doing. What Beyoncé was doing but we had a political angle to the information. Because we covered politics, we used the term Bolitics and so that was one of the things that helped grow the business.” It is this type of forward thinking that was the catalysis to begin BOMA.
It was the brainchild of Dexter Bridgeman who brought other South Florida media companies
together to bond forces of common interest for the promotion, development, longevity, empowerment, and financial stability of Black-owned media in South Florida. BOMA was formed in 2015 in a back room at New Birth Baptist church with media outlets and members Dexter A. Bridgeman (MIA Media Group), Tony & Woodie Lesesne (LMG Entertainment), Jessica Garrett Modkins (Hip Rock Star Advertising), Garth Reeves (Miami Times), Debra Toomer (WMBM), Sandy Walker (The Gospel Truth), and Peter Webley (Caribbean Today).
Today membership has increased to include Da-Venya Armstrong (Armstrong Creative), Tyron Barrington (Barrington Creative Production), Jesse Coleman (Video Mix TV), Melissa Hunter Davis (Sugarcane Magazine), Sommer Walker Davis (Synergy Marketing), Lynda V. Harris (Lynda V. Harris Independent Financial Advisor), Tamara Philippeaux (Island TV), and Calibe Thompson (Island Syndicate).
The Symposium is an annual opportunity to get to know Black media in South Florida. It is because of the support of Florida Power & Light, The Knight Foundation, WOW Marketing, Commissioner Barbara Jordan, Commissioner Dennis Moss, and Commissioner Jean Monestime that this event is able to take place.
