Through point-of-sale marketing, the tobacco industry manipulates retail environments to increase sales and tobacco use. The tobacco industry spends about $9.5 billion a year to market its products through-out the United States, and approximately $614.2 million of that budget is spent in Florida.1 Strategies that restrict advertising, limit the number of retailers in neighborhoods, and prohibit price discounting can help reduce tobacco use and its negative health outcomes.2

  With the omicron variant spreading rapidly, the United States is all but certain to see a sharp rise in breakthrough coronavirus infections among vaccinated people. These cases were relatively rare in the pre-omicron days, but the new variant has shown an ability to slip past the body’s first line of immune defenses. That means many Americans who have gotten the shots will at some point test positive.

     Omicron is the newest COVID-19 variant dominating the headlines. While this new strain of the virus is raising questions, we continue to learn more information about Omicron every day. As the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other public healthcare partners continue to monitor Omicron, here’s what we know about the variant so far:

The daily average number of new cases in the US has risen to 120,000. Cases are rising steeply in mid-western and northeastern states where colder weather has driven people to spend more time indoors.
