Seven human case(s) of West Nile virus illness have been reported to the Florida Department of Health in Broward County since January 1, 2020 and there is a heightened concern that additional residents will become ill. Broward County continues to be under a mosquito-borne illnesses alert. DOH-Broward and Broward County Mosquito Control Division continue surveillance and prevention efforts.

     Both California and Texas have recorded more than 1 million total cases, while states like Illinois, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and New Jersey have seen significant rises in COVID infections. The most recent available statistics show that the District of Columbia has more than 18,500 total positive cases and 657 deaths. Washington, DC health officials have administered nearly 572,000 COVID tests to roughly 272,000 residents.

     Since data shows that Black people are disproportionately affected by the virus, conventional wisdom might suggest that’s to whom the vaccine should be prioritized for once it’s ready to be rolled out to the masses. But the rollout strategy provided by the U.S. government doesn’t seem to prioritize anyone group even as Pfizer’s vaccine trials made sure to include a racially diverse set of participants in part because of the disproportionate effect that Covid has had on minority and other marginalized populations.

     Researchers at Oxford University in Great Britain noted that first-time diagnosis of anxiety, depression, and insomnia increased two-fold in patients after they’ve recovered from COVID. Further, they discovered that COVID survivors also found significantly higher risks of dementia.

Internationally Recognized and Award-Winning Surgeon, Dr. Leslie Ray Matthews launched a new campaign to educate the global community of the benefits of daily intake of Vitamin D.  Dr. Matthews has revolutionized the use of “high-dose” vitamin D in the frontline treatment of coronavirus and other diseases of chronic illnesses such as traumatic brain injuries, heart attacks, strokes, concussions, ventilator associated pneumonias, sepsis, ARDS, and infections. A former Mayo Clinic trained fellow and Senior Associate Consultant (SAC), former  professor of clinical surgery, and a former director of surgical critical care and trauma surgery, Dr. Matthews is no stranger to saving critical lives with cutting edge vitamin D research.

     The Module will introduce the community to a brief historical perspective of COVID-19 as it entered the United States and Miami-Dade County designated as a pandemic. The focus will be on the participant’s early experiences as it relates to the COVID-19 crisis and its multi-dimensional impact on individuals, families, groups, and communities. The Module will provide participants an opportunity to share their narrative with others in their respective communities is the foundational goal of this workshop. 

  Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Dr. Robert R. Redfield visited Florida A&M University (FAMU) Monday to discuss the University’s response to the global pandemic.
