Juneteenth, short for “June 19th”, represents the day in 1865 when Federal Troops entered Galveston, Texas, taking control of the state and ending enslavement for that state’s African Americans. Marking the true day of Freedoms and Liberty for People of Color.

“Unfortunately, the pain at the pump is likely to get even worse this week,” said Mark Jenkins, spokesman, AAA – The Auto Club Group. “Gasoline made very strong gains in the futures market last week. When that happens, we normally see retail prices rise. It can take days or a week for pump prices to reflect the change, but It wouldn’t be a surprise to see retailers raise their prices another 20 cents by Monday night. At this rate, it sure seems like there’s very little resistance to rising prices at the pump, and $5 a gallon is quickly becoming a very real possibility this summer.”

     While important to celebrate a day that freed our ancestors from the physical bondages and the inhumane capacity of slave owners to treat them as less than human beings, we must also look to the day as a reminder we have yet to successfully free Black community, from the vestiges of restraints, controls and power structures that bond us far beyond the physical realm of being enslaved.

Recently, Congresswoman Frederica Wilson (FL-24) presented a check for $1.7 million dollars to the Hollywood City Commission for body-worn cameras intended for the Hollywood Police Department. The funding for body-worn cameras is an effort to increase the transparency and accountability of local law enforcement that will help build trust and understanding within the City of Hollywood community.

   Trevor Mallory, President of the Democratic Black Caucus of Florida(DBCF) and its 28 local chapters vehemently disapproved of the recent Florida Supreme Court decision virtually upholding Governor Ron DeSantis’ redistricting map Friday, June 3, 2022.   
The conservative court’s decision with justices ruling 4 to 1 stated:  “At this time, this Court does not have the jurisdiction over this matter.”
