       In a crowded race with six candidates vying for the district five school board seat, the president of the Fort Lauderdale chapter of the NAACP, Marsha Ellison, was not gun shy in bringing them all forward to spell out their platforms and answer some very tough questions around critical race theory, the controversial PROMISE program, Don’t Say Gay legislation, and whether they support the Referendum that the Broward School Board will  placed before voters this August.

Congresswoman Val Demings came out swinging against US Senator Marco Rubio igniting crowds at a series of South Florida rallies. At the Little Haiti Cultural Center, the former Orlando police chief talked about the failure of Republicans like Rubio to protect and serve.  Demings pointed to the massacre of 19 Texas elementary school children as a consequence of the Senate Republicans blocking legislation dealing with the disturbing waves of gun violence.  

Officials say an 18-year-old shooter fatally shot 19 children and two adults at a Texas elementary school on Tuesday before being slain by police. According to Texas Department of Public Safety Sgt. Erick Estrada, the shooter, Salvador Ramos of Uvalde, also shot his grandmother before crashing a vehicle near the school. He stated that she is in critical condition. Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Police Chief Pete Arredondo believes the gunman acted alone.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Broward County today announced an unprecedented gift of $1.9 million from billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, part of a $122.6 million donation given to Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies across the nation.  Scott’s contribution will further the Big Brothers Big Sisters mission of ensuring young people have access to powerful mentoring experiences that empower them with a plan for their future and a mentor whose impact lasts a lifetime.

    The Fort Lauderdale chapter of the Links, Incorporated completed its 2021-2022 White Rose Program and Scholarship endeavor by awarding scholarships to five high school seniors. The high school seniors are Janiya Allen (Nova High School) who received the chapter’s Charter Member/Memorial scholarship and General scholarships were awarded to Melitia Sutherland (McArthur High School), Savannah Warner (Nova High School), Reagan Kearson (Everglades high School), and Joshua Blackwell (Nova High School).

    Police and fire authorities said a 32-year-old runner died Saturday after finishing a half marathon in Brooklyn in which 15 others were hurt. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in New York City stated an official cause and manner of death should be revealed in the following days. According to NYPD Det. Arlene Muniz, the marathoner was found unconscious, lying on the pavement, having fainted after crossing the finish line just before 9 a.m. in Brooklyn’s Brighton Beach area. The runner received rapid medical assistance before being evacuated to Coney Island Hospital. The runner was pronounced dead at the hospital per Muniz. The New York Fire Department reported 15 more people were sent to area hospitals as a result of the race. According to the FDNY, at least four people were seriously injured.

By now, we’re all aware of the unfortunate situation that occurred with Florida State Representative Ramon Alexander (D-Tallahassee).  In simple terms, it is unfortunate for the people of North Florida.  Leon and Gadsden counties have lost a warrior who was just hitting stride in his craft.  Set to take over the Democratic leadership of Florida in 2023, it was a shocking blow to residents.  Alexander, due to allegations of misconduct and a possible legal battle with a former FAMU employee announced that he will not seek re-election, thus forfeiting his opportunity to lead the Florida House.
