The Florida House on Monday began moving quickly on a plan that would stiffen requirements on businesses to check the immigration status of workers, crack down on bringing undocumented immigrants into the state and require hospitals to collect data about whether patients are in the country legally.

Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee called on Chief Justice John Roberts to investigate Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomasâs extravagant travel arrangements, which were funded by a Republican donor and that they believed to be in violation of the moral standards expected of âany person in a position of public trust.â Chairman Richard Durbin and the other 10 Democratic members of the committee wrote to Roberts announcing that the committee would hold a hearing on the subject in the upcoming days.
