     This statue is called “Through His Eyes.”  It is a monument to the godfather of Sweet Auburn avenue, John Wesley Dobbs. The artist cleverly opted to leave the eyes open in the statue.  A sly acknowledgement of Dobb’s vision for “Sweet Auburn.” Auburn became the incubator for the civil rights era, and the commercial, cultural, spiritual center of Black Atlanta.

In the past few years, we’ve seen Ida B. Wells — one of the most prominent journalists, anti-lynching activists, and women’s rights activists in history — finally get the recognition she deserves. The Ida B. Wells Society was launched in 2016. In 2018, the New York Times belatedly ran an obituary about her. And in 2019, after a campaign by Wells’ great-granddaughter Michelle Duster, Chicago finally named a street after Wells. 

On Saturday, former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords visited with survivors of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting. Afterwards, Giffords Florida held a press conference with survivors Anthony Montalto (father of Gina Montalto) and Manny Oliver (father of Joaquin Oliver), as well as Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Congressman Jared Moskowitz, State Representative Christine Hunschofsky, and State Representative Dan Daley.

     The Detective warned readers that Governor Ron DeSantis is like a dog on a bone when it comes to individuals and organizations challenging his position in the sand.  His moves on the chess board are quite predictable, but no one has figured a way to stop or slow down his progress.

I want to thank Bobby Henry, Sr. for giving me this opportunity to present an icon and a pillar of the community here in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Ms. Mary Alice McClendon. I am honored to share what a joy Mary Alice was to the community. Mary has always shared her wisdom, straightforwardness and outspoken words with family members and those who love being in her presence.

 Corporate volunteerism connects companies to the communities where they operate and creates a critical bridge between people and the causes they want to support. But it does something else – it engages employees, while giving them a greater sense of purpose and a deeper connection to their workplaces.
