     Education has the power to transform lives, but in the United States, not all classrooms are created equal. The socioeconomic inequities that pervade the country’s education system have had a disproportionate impact on Black children; contributing to an ever-growing achievement gap and often clouding their sight when it comes to envisioning a limitless future and seeing beyond their circumstances. Social entrepreneur Taylor Culliver is on a mission to change the narrative and cultivate spaces where Black boys can feel seen, heard and valued through the creation of his nonprofit Brother Box.

     Going into year three of Covid-19 can cause some people to be quite anxious about when it will come close to an end. Though the chance of getting Covid-19 is still very prevalent, vaccinations and boosters, along with protective behaviors like social distancing and mask-wearing, can reduce the risk of infection and severe illness. Being able to stay sane during Covid is very important because your mental health can take a toll on your physical health.

     When we look at people, meet people, and observe people, we tend to look at their face, head, and hair as a person’s primary identifier. When you look at a person from different parts of the World, the hair sometimes serves as a way to determine their origin or relationship. Our hair can be that unique identifier as each strand of our hair contains our DNA. 

     Now, these small acts of kindness may seem insignificant to some, but for an isolated lonely senior, the offer of companionship, a hot meal, or someone to tidy up your home when you ‘re not well enough to do it yourself was priceless. Of all the gifts Ms. Janie shared with her neighbors I think time was the most important. So often no one has time for the elderly any more. But Ms. Janie let her little light shine on those that needed it most.

     As of this writing, 695 people have been charged for federal crimes related to the January 6, 2021, Capitol breach—crimes motivated by the lie that Joe Biden won because of nationwide election fraud. Of those 695 people, not one has been charged with sedition, defined in the US Code as two or more people conspiring to “overthrow, put down, or to destroy” the government, “prevent, hinder, or delay the execution of any law,” or “by force to seize, take, or possess any property of the United States.”

     The School Board of Broward County, Florida voted today to amend School Board Policy 2170 to require vendors and visitors to wear face coverings while indoors in any District school, facility or vehicle beginning Monday, January 3, 2022. Students, although not required to wear face coverings due to a recent state law, and employees are strongly encouraged to do so.

     America: the only country where racist teens can live free, while Black teens stand in courtrooms taking pleas. American society normalizes a racist phase so much that young racists do not expect repercussions afterward. Society allows racist teens to pass off socially unacceptable behavior as a “mistake” and grants them a “get out of jail free card”. Meanwhile, people of color (POC) do not receive that same luxury. This societal double standard results from white privilege.
