We all must begin to break the taboo and stigma associated with mental illness. As a family physician of over 30 years, I have found that people feel very comfortable talking about a cough, a cold, their nervous stomach, a headache, chest pain, palpitations, sore muscle or backache. The most difficult conversation, though, has been the one surrounding mental illness.

The Bridgerton British nobility was the theme for the 56th annual Frances J. Bright Woman’s Club (FJBWC) Debutante Cotillion held at the Woodfield Country Club in Boca Raton on April 27, 2025. The corporate sponsor was Stark Arrow Exterminators of Boca Raton. The cotillion is a time honored tradition of a formal ball that emerged in 18th-century France that then spread to Great Britain eventually crossing the pond to America and officially began appearing in the Black community in late 19th century.

Dr. Harris stepped out of the space shuttle Discovery in orbit on February 9, 1995, shattering expectations for the brothers of Kappa Alpha Psi. This auspicious landmark for Black America had been a goal for Dr. Ben since he was a kid. He told the Houston Chronicle, “I also remember, I think it was in the beginning of high school, writing a letter to NASA and saying, ‘I would like to be an astronaut, what do I need to do?’ And so they sent back this list of requirements. One of them was to have an advanced degree in a STEM field. So I started looking at careers that could lead me to NASA. One of those was aerospace engineering, and the other one was medicine. And the medicine stuck.” He pushed past exhaustion and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from the University of Houston and a doctorate in medicine from Texas Tech. Dr. Ben completed his residency at the Mayo Clinic in 1985 and was rewarded with training as a flight surgeon at the Aerospace School of Medicine.
“The Sport of Kings” gained its moniker because of the British royalty and aristocrats’ love of thoroughbred racing. When horse racing came to America, an unexpected phenomenon was discovered. Over the course of generations, slaves groomed the horses, performing tasks like cleaning, feeding, exercising, brushing, clipping, and hoof care. Cheryl Brown annotated in Black History & Politics, “Because of the amount of time Blacks spent with the horses, Black riders had a superior connection with the horses compared to the White riders and trainers of their horses.”
Recently, the Florida Department of Education announced Shelly Teel, a third-grade teacher at Westside Elementary School in Columbia County as one of five finalists for 2026 Florida Teacher of the Year. The state finalists were chosen from 76 district teachers of the year. The 2026 Florida Department of Education Teacher of the Year winner will be announced in July.
