TALLAHASSEE, FL – Florida Watch has announced Natasha Sutherland as its new Executive Director, marking a significant leadership transition for the progressive watchdog organization. The move comes as former Executive Director Josh Weierbach steps into a new role as Senior Advisor, following five years of leadership.

Sutherland, a first-generation American, educator, and military spouse, brings years of political and communications experience to the role. She has worked in state government, served as a public-school teacher, and most recently helped lead the “Yes on 4” campaign to limit government interference with abortion access in Florida. Since joining Florida Watch in 2021, Sutherland rose from Black Constituency Communications Director to Deputy Director, becoming a key architect of the organization’s messaging and outreach efforts.

“As a military brat, a daughter of immigrants, and a military spouse, I’ve seen firsthand what the American Dream can be—and what it costs,” said Sutherland. “Florida is the home in my heart. This state, and the hardworking families who make it special, are worth fighting for.”

In her new role, Sutherland will continue to advance Florida Watch’s mission to hold elected officials accountable and fight for policies that improve the lives of everyday Floridians—such as access to quality education, fair wages, and reproductive freedom.

Josh Weierbach praised his successor, saying, “There is no one more qualified or prepared to build on Florida Watch’s successes than Natasha. Her unique perspective, strategic mind, and unwavering commitment to Floridians make her the right leader for this moment.”

Florida Watch partners with Progress Florida to lead the Florida Communications and Research Hub, a statewide epicenter for progressive advocacy. Progress Florida Executive Director Mark Ferrulo called Sutherland “a changemaker” who will drive the mission forward in “new and compelling ways.”

State leaders and allies echoed their support. Florida Democratic Party Chair Nikki Fried said, “There can be no doubt Floridians are well-served by Natasha’s continued leadership.” House Democratic Leader Fentrice Driskell added, “She is a powerful advocate for every Floridian’s right to be healthy, prosperous, and safe.”

Senate Democratic Leader-Designate Tracie Davis, Equal Ground Executive Director Genesis Robinson, and Climate and Clean Energy Equity Fund President Andrea Mercado also voiced strong support for Sutherland, citing her commitment to justice, equity, and environmental advocacy.

As she steps into her new role, Sutherland says her focus is clear: “We will fight every day for a Florida where the American Dream is within reach—no matter your zip code, your background, or who you love.”
