The 1st annual event themed “The Power of One” highlighted how one person or organization can make an immense difference in the City of Lauderhill. Almost 200 guests gathered to support friends and family accept their Lauderhill Heroes award. Categories in which awardees received the H-E-R-O-E-S accolade included Healthcare, Education, Residents, Opportunities, and Service.

A highlight of this campaign is Broward: Read for the Record! part of the Jumpstart Read for the Record global efforts to raise awareness around the critical importance of early literacy and increase access to high-quality children’s books. Each year, Read for the Record brings together millions of adults and children as they read the same book on the same day, building an intergenerational community through reading. The book selected for this year is Nigel and the Moon written by Antwan Eady and illustrated by Gracey Zhang. The book, published by HarperCollins, encourages children to celebrate where they come from, who they are, and who they want to be. The author will be in South Florida for the Broward County Library’s Literary Conference, and is scheduled to read to children at Thurgood Marshal Elementary.
Tarneisha Peters has joined the Florida-based Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) Black Business Investment Fund (BBIF) as Regional Director – West Florida. In her role she is responsible for developing BBIF’s West Florida region, building partner relationships with banks, foundations, and other not-for-profit organizations. She serves as the in-market lead, extending BBIF’s core service of providing loans and financial technical assistance services to a target of BIPOC and underserved small businesses and communities.

Get ready to move! Latin dancing is returning to the Pompano Beach Cultural Center. Following on the heels of the Center’s much-beloved dance series Sabado de Salsa, Pompano’s newest participatory dance program will be kicking off in October. Presented by renowned Latin dancer and instructor Alex Bezianis of Poppin’ Events, Baila Pompano will include salsa, bachata, and other Latin dances, with each event including a one-hour dance class, a live eight-piece band, a DJ, and performances by professional dancers. The program will be held quarterly at the Center, starting at 8pm, Friday, October 21, 2022. The series continues February 17, May 19 and September 15 of 2023, with the final night of the program kicking off Hispanic Heritage Month.
