The Senate worked through the night, taking a series of back-to-back amendment votes that are among the last steps toward final passage of Democrats’ sweeping health-care and climate-change legislation on track to be approved. A vote on final passage of the bill will take place when amendment votes are completed. The Inflation Reduction Act would be the largest climate investment in US history, and it would make significant changes to health policy by granting Medicare the ability to negotiate the prices of certain prescription drugs for the first time, as well as extending expiring health care subsidies for three years. To pay for it, the legislation would levy new taxes. Senate Democrats are using a special procedure to pass the bill without the support of Republicans. After passing the Senate, the legislation would need to be approved by the House of Representatives before President Joe Biden could sign it into law.
