   Most of the people on the playground were high school students and a few community activists. Just Dr. King’s presence was enough to make you feel special. At that time, I wondered, why would a man of Dr. King’s stature care about what happened in Greenwood, Mississippi to Colored People. That questioned was answered as I grew older and realized that what was happening in Greenwood, Mississippi was happening to Black people all over the United States and the World for that matter. Little did I realize that that one day in Greenwood, Mississippi would change the total trajectory of my entire life. At the meeting, he talked about how important it was for us to make sure we register to vote and that we had to assist each other with the process. Plus, as young people, we did not have the same heightened since of fear as the older adults in the town – same as today.

On Sunday July 19, 2020 Broward County Mayor Dale Holness held a press conference at the NAACP office in Fort Lauderdale declaring July 19, 2020 as Rubin Stacy Day throughout the county. In a released statement, U.S. Congressman Alcee Hastings said, “The lynching of Mr. Rubin Stacy on July 19, 1935 is a horrific stain on the history of South Florida and remains a tragedy in our community to this day.”

     Johnson’s EquiTrust is providing critical financial support to underserved communities and businesses that have been traditionally neglected. These small and diverse businesses often have difficulty developing strong lending relationships with big banks. According to the Center for Responsible Lending, up to 90% of businesses owned by people of color have been, or will likely be, shut out of the PPP program. 

       I believe online school is the safest option. Children can get their education and not have to take the risk of going to school and getting COVID-19.

The Salvation Army of Broward County will launch its first local Stuff the Bus Virtual School Supplies Drive in conjunction with Walmart. The drive will kick-off on Monday, August 3, and will offer generous supporters several ways to donate – via Walmart’s online registry, through the organization’s secure donation portal and via drop-offs. All supplies will be distributed to school-aged children in need in Broward County just in time for the start of the new school year on Wednesday, August 19.
