Island SPACE Caribbean Museum and Caribbean Professionals Network are excited to announce the third annual Rum Cake and Caribbean Black Cake Fest, set to take place on Sunday, Oct. 20, 2024, from 2 to 6 p.m. This event, presented in collaboration with various South Florida bakers from throughout the Caribbean, promises to be a celebration of Caribbean culture and culinary diversity. Attendees will have the opportunity to sample a variety of traditional Spanish, French and Dutch Caribbean rum cakes and the beloved black cake — dark fruit or plum pudding cakes popular across the English-speaking Caribbean.

The film highlights McGhee’s journey from being overlooked by society to becoming a powerful and influential figure, driven by his mother’s unyielding faith, his own hard work, and relentless determination. The film stars Kamal Ani-Bello and Romeo Miller, with Miller also contributing to the production of the film under the Romeoland Studios banner alongside Marco Moline, Florida Film House.
Florida Memorial University, Miami-Dade’s only Histori-cally Black College or University (HBCU), is experiencing a resurgence in its aviation program. The institution has revamped its aviation and safety program, offering students the opportunity to earn degrees and pilot licenses certified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This comprehensive program enables students to pursue careers flying commercial and cargo jets, as well as drones.

The YMCA’s Beach Ball is one of the hottest social events to kick off the season, with more than 600 philanthropic and business professionals in attendance. Guests are encouraged to dress to the theme, “Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler” (Let the Good Times Roll) During the evening guests will enjoy a cocktail reception, dinner, live musical entertainment, dancing and a live and silent auction. Proceeds from the Beach Ball supports Financial Assistance for Aquatics programming so that anyone, regardless of their ability to pay, can come to the Y to learn water safety. Unfortunately, South Florida leads the nation in childhood drownings, and the Y’s mission is to work with the community to stem this tide.
