     Harris is among a score of Black professionals who said Tuesday that paying little attention to the sentencing of Dean, and for that matter, any other high-profile case involving the killing of African American citizens, is now common behavior amongst themselves and their peers. Such cases are too emotionally taxing to watch, they said.

     Mamie Till-Mobley appointed Alvin Sykes as the advocate for herself and her son Emmett Till. Together they founded the Emmett Till Justice Campaign (ETJC). Mamie appointed Alvin as President of the ETJC in 2003. Alvin’s first accomplishment at the helm was the successful reopening of Emmett Till’s 1955 murder investigation through the Department of Justice in the State of Mississippi and the FBI. Shortly after this, Mamie would pass away. Alvin would carry the torch of the ETJC until his passing on March 19, 2021.

Blacks and Jews in the United States have had a long history and tradition of working together and sacrificing together for freedom, justice, equality, and equity. Lest we forget that we have marched together for over a century. We have shared blood together. And we have died together for the cause of freedom in the Civil Rights Movement.

     The institution, whose history dates back to 1636, last week tapped Claudine Gay, who is currently dean of Harvard’s faculty of arts and scientists, to take over from current president Larry Bacow in 2023. She’ll be Harvard’s 30th president and only the second woman. Every other Harvard president were white men.

     U.S. Postal Service has announced that civil rights leader and U.S. Rep. John Lewis will be amongst the latest to be included in their upcoming 2023 stamp releases. This honor is meant to celebrate the life and legacy of one of America’s greatest freedom fighters.
