Women of Color Struggle to Access Housing and Food as Pandemic Continues

     As the most consequential election in our lifetimes approaches, it could also be the most contagious as the coronavirus remains a steady, unfortunate force to be reckoned within the United States. But there are certain health considerations that have put in place in an effort to accommodate people who want to vote in-person as well as those who prefer to cast absentee ballots — all while adhering to the Covid-19 social distancing guidelines that have shaped our existences for the better part of the past six months.

     According to Pew Research Center, women lead men in voter turnout across all races. Still, the reported 10 percent gap between Black female and male voters (64% vs. 54%) in the 2016 presidential election marks the largest gender disparity in any racial group. It also means the Black male ballot holds significant value this fall. With just less than 60 days until the election, and so much at stake, #TheBlackBallot rounded up five political issues Black men can effectively address at the polls on Election Day.

      It was the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals that ruled on Monday to end Temporary Protection Status (TPS) for immigrants in the U.S. from for Black and brown countries, but Donald Trump deserves all the credit. That’s because the president “flipped” the traditionally liberal West Coast-based circuit by methodically appointing nothing but conservative judges.

     If it wasn’t already apparent all the things that Americans have lost under Donald Trump‘s administration — lives and jobs, for starters — thousands of Black women of all ages who are leaders in their respective industries took it upon themselves to pen a scathing open letter to the president emphasizing his shortcomings when it comes to Black people in particular. The letter served as a response to Trump’s infamous question he asked Black voters when he was a candidate four years ago: “What do you have to lose?”

     Colorectal cancer is the third most common cancer in both men and women in America. It is the second most common cause of death related to the disease. African Americans are disproportionately impacted with a 20 percent greater rate than whites and an even greater degree of mortality.

         Civil rights icon Dr. Benjamin Chavis, former NAACP executive director and current president/CEO of the National Newspaper Publishers Association (NNPA), will become host of a weekly Black-oriented public affairs talk show on PBS (Public Broadcasting System) in October.
