5 Black Women to Consider For Next Supreme Court Justice

      Tuesday marks National Voting Registration Day, which falls exactly 42 days away from Election Day. But in order to participate in the democratic process and cast a ballot in what just may be the most consequential election in modern history, you have to first register to vote.

Lessie Benningfield Randle, a 105-year old Black woman from Tulsa, Oklahoma, one of two known survivors of the tragic Tulsa massacre that is still alive, has filed a lawsuit demanding reparations. She alleges that the act of racial violence is still haunting the community after almost 100 years.

      NewsOne’s The Black Ballot initiative and its ongoing political conversation about the Black experience in America recently turned to the topic of historically Black colleges and universities and the roles HBCUs and their students are playing with “the Black vote” as Election Day rapidly approaches.

     “We cannot afford another four years of Donald Trump’s chaotic presidency and the DNC is not taking nothing for granted this November,” said DNC Black Caucus Chair Virgie M. Rollins. “We are making the much-needed investments in Black communities across the country to ensure every voter is able to make themselves heard at the ballot box.”

     Israel, Spain and France all fought the novel coronavirus into abatement in the first months of the pandemic with tough measures that won international praise. But the three countries now share a painful distinction: Their infection rates have shot past that of the United States, even though Americans never got the virus under control.

Coping with the day-to-day realities of a year like no other, Cassandra Welchlin, a community organizer, has worked to get single mothers the childcare they need, assisted foster care youths in accessing free Lyft rides and aided seniors with free food deliveries. With the presidential election around the corner, Welchlin’s work is focused on local and systemic change. “We don’t want anyone in office leading us that demeans our people,” she said. “A change has to come.”
