     Jean was shot in 2018 inside his Dallas apartment by white, female, off-duty police officer Amy Guyger. Guyger claimed she shot Botham because she thought she had entered her own home, and he was a trespassing burglar. Like many controversial police killings of minorities, Botham’s murder sparked national outrage.

     “I don’t like to have conversations just to sugarcoat people and say, ‘Yeah, we can get a Raising Cane’s,’” Nguyen said of a popular chicken chain. “You know very well that people here like those chickens, those fried chicken … you can’t ask people to start up a business and not be able to make money.”

In a continuing campaign to weaken civil rights protections, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) announced a new rule that would gut key protections under the Fair Housing Act (FHA). The Act’s disparate impact standard has been used for nearly 50 years to challenge the systemic discrimination that pervades housing, lending, insurance, and other financial institutions. The gutting of this rule comes on the heels of attempts to destroy other important requirements under the FHA. National Consumer Law Center advocates call on HUD to immediately rescind the new rule and restore key civil rights protections.

It’s not just that Black men get killed – it’s also that Black families are strained by Black men’s daily encounters with cops.
