     According to a March 2019 study by the National Community Reinvestment Coalition (NCRC), more than 135,000 Black and Hispanics around the nation were displaced between 2000 and 2012. Gentrification and displacement of long-time residents were most intense from 2000 to 2013 in the nation’s biggest cities, and rare in most other places, according to the study. During those years, gentrification was concentrated in larger cities with vibrant economies but also appeared in smaller cities where it often impacted areas with the most amenities near central business districts.

In a new lawsuit filed against James’ estate in the Supreme Court of Erie County, New York, a woman alleges that the “Super Freak” singer raped her 41 years ago. The unidentified woman, who said she was 15 at the time of the incident, is reportedly seeking $50 million in damages from James’ estate. She claims that in 1979 James visited the group home where she resided in Buffalo, New York, and raped her. “He grabbed my hair and pushed my head into the pillow,” the woman stated in court papers. “He told me to ‘shut up and quit moving or I’ll cut you.’  The woman filed the suit under the Child Victims Act, a measure that supersedes any previous statute of limitations on sexual assault against minors.

In an effort to forge more Black male leaders in business, social justice and global issues, Rev. Toby Sanders founded From the Fire: Leadership Academy for Young Men. It is a program of At the Well Conferences, Inc. (ATW), a non-profit organization created by CEO Jacqueline Glass-Campbell.

     “We’re thrilled to welcome a new group of student leaders to our headquarters,” says Rodney Francis, director of Diversity and Inclusion. “Every year, we enjoy interacting with young men identified as up-and-comers in their community and giving them a glimpse into the inner workings of our business. It’s our hope that they leave inspired and equipped with tips for success in school and in life.”

Then New York Mayor Mike Bloomberg with then President Barack Obama. Bloomberg, who has yet to directly compete in a Democratic primary or caucus, is courting Black voters through advertisements and private meetings – including a $3.5 million ad buy in the Black Press.

A Harvard CAPS/Harris Poll survey released last week found that 22 percent of African American voters approve of Trump’s job performance.

Jarrett M. Adams was wrongfully convicted of sexual assault at age 17 and sentenced to 28 years in a maximum-security prison. After serving nearly 10 years and filing multiple appeals, Jarrett was exonerated with the assistance of the Wisconsin Innocence Project

     Of Teeq Tequila’s three products, co-owner Nayana Ferguson says it’s hard to pick a favorite. “It’s like picking a favorite kid! I’d say that the Coconut Lime is my favorite, just because there’s nothing like it on the market. It’s the smoothest, and you can sip it alone,” Ferguson says.

      Although HBCUs are celebrated for their culturally enriching environments and unrivaled homecoming weekend festivities, they are also some of the nation’s most academically rigorous institutions, attracting competitive students from various backgrounds. Benedict College’s 2023 cohort is no exception. This school year, the 2019 “HBCU of the Year” (named by who) welcomed over 800 students, a class that includes three Valedictorians, an overall GPA of 3.1, and an increase in international student enrollment.
