The audacity of the Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, to decry that African Americans Studies and (by extension) his African American constituents don’t have value. Well thankfully, we are not defined by who people say we are, but by what we say we are. So, what are we telling ourselves?

February 14 marks five years since 17 innocent lives were taken at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Our hearts remain heavy as we remember the victims of the senseless tragedy and offer condolences to all who continue to grieve. Yet, while the pain will never fully heal, we find solace in knowing their legacies live on through meaningful reforms and action.
America’s federal and state governments have maintained a linear path throughout history of passing laws to establish white supremacy ideology. They’ve also worked to propagate a stealth systemic air of white privileges. DeSantis, acting as a misologist, one who hates or dislikes reasoning or arguments, has declared that the AP African American Studies Course is “Inexplicably Contrary to State Law.”

History tells us that white slavers sold Black kids conceived with Black slave women, they ordered dogs to attack slaves that ran away or didn’t obey orders, whites brutalized, tortured and killed Black children like Emmit Till with the blessings of lawmen and assassinated Black leaders with the cooperation of federal agents and negro informants.
For example, on January 3, I generated a series of about one hundred images using the word beautiful in conjunction with the words “kids,” “baby,” and “girl” on the Dall-E. This tool generates images using AI based on written descriptions.
It’s sad to imagine that Half Moon Bay and Monterey Park will join a list with Uvalde and Buffalo and Orlando and Charleston and Sandy Hook and Columbine, reference points for a national epidemic we haven’t mustered the will to end despite decades of tragedies. But they likely will unless we can confront both the symptom that is gun violence and the underlying disease that causes it.
Memphis is once again a city with the eyes of the nation focused on it!
