South Florida has lost a Historian and Baseball enthusiast in the person of Danny Phillips. Phillips passed away on November 7, 2024, after a brief illness. Phillips was the Founder and Director of More Than a Game, Inc., a Non-profit organization based in Fort Lauderdale FL. Phillips started More Than a Game alongside fellow Baseball enthusiast Eddie Edwards Jr. in 2004. The organization educated the Community both young and old on the era of Negro League Baseball when Blacks weren’t allowed to play in the Major Leagues due to segregation.

On Sunday, October 27, a diverse coalition of over 100 community members gathered at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in Boca Raton for the “Souls to the Polls Early Voting Rally.” Organized by the Jewish Community Relations Council (JCRC) of South Palm Beach County, the advocacy arm of the Jewish Federation of South Palm Beach County; Temple Beth El of Boca Raton; DISC of Pearl City; and churches in Pearl City—Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, Macedonia A.M.E. Church, and Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church—the event aimed to empower local citizens to exercise their right to vote while fostering community solidarity.
If you lived in South Florida during the Late 60’s, you probably woke up listening to the radio as you dressed for work, or while the children were getting ready for school. When you got into your car, more than likely, the radio was turned to 1470 AM at the station we called our station, WRBD Rockin’ Big Daddy Radio. As the early 70’s rolled in, we were moving and grooving to the best in R&B and Gospel music, starting off in morning drive with Joe Fisher. He took us through the traffic jams and the weather reports, the school lunch menus and the news of the day. His deep and powerful voice kept us in the know as he became more than a Deejay.
