Born on February 12, 1931, in Miami, Florida, Ida lived a life marked by grace, strength, and unwavering faith. Ida’s spiritual journey began early, nurtured by her family’s church, A.M. Cohen Temple Church of God in Christ, where she flourished under the leadership of the late Bishop A.M. Cohen.

Herman graduated from Xavier University of Louisiana, a Catholic and historically Black university in New Orleans. She later worked on school desegregation efforts in her hometown of Mobile. In 1977, when Herman was 29 years old, then-President Jimmy Carter selected her to lead the Women’s Bureau at the Department of Labor.
In response to the passing of former U.S. Secretary of Labor Alexis Herman, the first Black person to hold the position, the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies issued the following statement mourning her loss:
